On the small island of Samal in the Davao Gulf, Philippines, mangroves are being destroyed over the past 30 years. They are necessary to protect the coast, the reefs and serve as a breeding ground for fish. A decade ago, the mangroves were cut down without thought. To improve the situation in the future, according to estimates by the local environmental agency (DENR) approximately 500,000 mangroves are needed. With over 90,000 seedlings, which were donated by ‘Save the Rainforest’, the first success is already visible. For years, the mangroves are protected so that it is guaranteed that they will not be cut down again in the future.
